This video from a mechanic is about a 2021 Bronco Sport that needs a new engine. Why? Because some genius at Jiffy Lube overtightened and stripped out the oil drain plug. This, of course, allowed all the engine oil to drain out, and the driver thought they could make it to a shop. Wrong!

If you take your car to a shop for regular maintenance be sure you check their work. For oil changes, check the oil with the dipstick before you start it and make sure it was refilled with fresh oil. Start the car and let it idle for a few minutes before leaving, then bend down and check underneath for oil leaks. Any big leaks that will kill your engine should be apparent. Then check under it again the next morning or after it's sat in the same spot for a few hours. That should show you any smaller leaks, or spills the shop didn't clean up. And for Pete's sake, if the oil light comes on while you're driving pull over and shut the engine down immediately. The engine will self-destruct in very short order without oil.

Wait, are you saying oil is a requirement and not optional? I can’t believe Ford makes us keep dinosaur blood in these!

I thought they ran on Flower power and blue skies.

We will now return to your regular scheduled programming.

Jiffy lube did the same thing to my cousins car. His motor seized up. Why anyone goes to those dummies is beyond me. Get what you pay for

I used to go to Jiffy Lube and had nothing but good luck until my local Jiffy Lube was purchased by someone new and decided to go for the fast buck rather than the steady customer. They always vacuumed my car and washed the windows with the prior owner. With the new owner, it was always "oh, the vacuum's broken and we're out of paper towels." After the 2nd time, I decided to go to AAA and get it done there.

What a mistake. Got the first oil change, went home, oil under it in the morning. I looked and it was leaking from the oil filter. Probably forgot to lube the seal. Took it back, they "fixed" it, took it home. The next morning, oil on the ground again, this time from the drain plug. Took it back, they "fixed" it again. It was good for 6 months, then started leaking from the drain plug again.

So I took it to a Ford dealer and it turned out it didn't have the washer on the drain plug, they used a piece of chamois for a washer.

Now I just go to Ford and don't worry about it.

Who needs Jiffy Lube? We have nature's lubricant. Just spit in the oil reservoir! You can totally drive on that.

Crazy people spending money for nothing. ?

They did that to my wife’s MDX back in 2009.
I caught it down the road. Stopped at a friends house for an hour and dripped oil all over his driveway. Went back and they had to work it into the schedule to fix it. Drain plug was cross threaded. Long story short, they didn’t have what they needed and were dragging their feet. I took it to a Firestone a mile away and got it handled that night

Why would anyone in their right mind take their new car to Jiffy Lube?

Take it to Quick Lane or a Ford dealer!
This is the correct answer, if you don’t DIY. Should this happen, there’s no argument between businesses as to who’s paying, it’s on the dealer & they can argue to Ford if it’s warranty. After warranty? If you don’t continue to use Ford, find a trusted local mechanic.

I got about 20 miles away from a Jiffy Lube after getting an oil change there. My phone rang. It was JL calling to tell me they forgot to put the skid plate back on. Had to return and sit in line for twenty minutes to get it put back on. I was pissed off beyond measure.

Had a no oil oil change at the dealer once. Came to waiting room and said your Escape is done. Wait for 5-6 minutes to pay as there was a line. Go out to running car. Drive about 2 miles tops and starts chugging like a sick tractor. No warning lights. Turn around and just coast into dealer. Engine dies in front of two bays. End of day(probably contributed) and customers can’t leave bay. 5 “techs” in engine bay. In the rush to get everything buttoned up at end of day, forget to put oil in.
Took full responsibility, free Ecosport loaner. New block, turbo, etc. 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. Escape is still running strong.

I still go to that dealer and every time I ask how their oil change check list is working.

They say “Oh, you’re the guy”.

So far, not to jinx it, all is good.

I bought the maintenance package, so I'll be going to the dealership for oil changes. There's one about an hour away that's on the way to where I took this picture, so that's always an option.

I do my own changes as well. Getting the skidplate off is a bit of a hassle but it's worth it for the peace of mind and satisfaction of doing it yourself.

In my entire life, I've taken it somewhere to have the oil changed exactly once. They stripped the plug and it leaked oil from then on.
