Anyone else have this happen? Pretty light off-roading and hit rocks apparently. Either two unlucky strikes or the canister is placed in a vulnerable position. About $1k all in to fix each time. ?

Definitely unlucky it's the first I've heard of this. What model?

It would be interesting to see if the BL plates would mount to lesser trim models
Is there any reason to think that they would not?

I honestly wouldn’t wheel these without the front skid that the BL has. Especially in the rocks. I hit mine every time I’m out. The front doesn’t have the clearance the rear does. Even lifted. I’ve never touched the gas tank skid. Always the front bumper and the skid plate behind it. Sucks you’ve destroyed the evap can twice

Yes I had the exact same thing happen except I never ran over anything and the dealership tried to claim I must've tried jacking my car up in the wrong place lol, I've been a race car fabricator for 40 plus years so the jacking bs is just that bs, they wanted 600 plus dollars to repair the issue and I told them to pound sand, $360.00 labor, $340.00 for the new canister, I bought a new canister online from parts geek for $180.00 and changed the canister in my driveway in 1/2 hour, the part I got from parts geek is a Motorcraft unit just like the dealer sells and in fact when I contacted Ford about the issue they didn't have anything to say even though I mentioned to them that putting the canister under the truck is stupid and it's vulnerable where it's at with no skid plate to protect it only a piece of cardboard with carpet on it and contrary to belief there are quite a few comments here on the forum by hundreds of owners who've had the same issue.

Most have the evap out. My JK I just added a skid out of precaution. The units are cheap and easy to replace. Plus they’re right out in the open

Is this something a handy but non-auto guy could do? Are there instructions anywhere?

Yes it is something the every day person can do, there's multiple what I call wire nuts, maybe 7 holding the cover on as well as 3 push plastic connectors, then there are 3 10mm nuts holding the canister in place and the typical Ford plastic fuel line retainer clips, it's quite simple if you just pay attention and take your time.
