Everyone is talking about 245/65r17. Why choose that over 225/75r17? You achieve greater sidewall and retain the same tire width. I wonder if this would help with tire rub on the internal wheel well if its a thing for some. I am curious and naïve on Tire Sizing so be gentle. I'd like to here the why and why nots on this matter. thanks!

The first number is the tire width in mm, therefore a 245/65R17 tire is 20 mm wider than a 225/75R17. The first number behind the slash is the aspect ratio, which is the tire sidewall height as a percentage of the width. The sidewall on a 225/75R17 would be roughly 169 mm; the sidewall on the 245/65R17 would be roughly 10 mm (approx 3/8") shorter.

Only two tires listed in that size on TR's web site and both are LT load range tires. One is 30.4" in diameter and the other is 30.2" and neither are considered a top choice.

There seems to be 3 good tires in a 235/70/17 though, that are 30" in diameter and yes, a narrower tire will help with tire rub.

You can use the tiresize.com website to compare different tire sizes. Here is a comparison between 225/75/17 and 245/65/17:
Ford Bronco Sport Why not 225/75R17? 1651257993578

edit: I forgot to mention that most of the rubbing in on the front/back of the wheel well. That rubbing comes from tire diameter more so than tire width. There is a point at which tire width will cause rubbing but 245 isn't it. A 245/70/17 will cause rubbing while a 245/65/17 seems to be safe. It does appear that 245/65/17 is the largest tire you can fit without modifying, at least in the brands/models that have been tried so far.

My rabbit hole started using the tire size comparison calculator. That's how I came to realize the differentiation in sizes between the two. Makes sense tho, and as @Bluebaru stated, there arent many tires available in that size anyway. thanks!

Done a bunch of research. Also let me say I preach tall and skinny AT tires to folks who live in snow states. A 75 sidewall tire is going to rub if the truck doesn't have a lift. Period. Too tall. Now 70 sidewall tires are a different story. 245-65-17 is spec same as stock just a bit wider and taller 29.5". Won't rub .

A 235-70-17 tall and skinny will run 30 inches and the narrower 235 will clear no rub. The plus is a taller tire which rules. The negative is selection is slim.

I am 2 weeks from delivery of our BL. I am doing Nokian AT 235/70/17.

Discount has them for $140 each and I know Nokian makes a bitchin all around tire. Also BL shows in 2 weeks. Going straight to Discount to get mounted.

too tall, need that lift for a 75 series tire. youre gonna lose that driveability factor

A lift will only solve rubbing issues if the suspension is not articulated and the steering wheel turned.

If you want a good size for the snow, I think 215/75/17 is the way to go (29.5” dia).

Its been my experience that even a little more width adds to the contact patch of the tire. That will aid with grip but also add stability in crosswinds and passing larger vehicles.

Wow, great answer. I'd love to see the outcome of these on your ride.

I have been looking to upgrade the falken wildpeaks that came on mine, 235/65 and 29in. I did look at the 225/75, I liked the cooper discoverer (30.4in) which were 10 ply, but after some measurin' I would need to do some trimming on the fender well to fit without rubbing. My choice now is 235/70, still with the Cooper Discoverer in XL load range. At 30in it will fit, may still do some trimming to give it space cause its as close to rubbing while not rubbing as I could get

I am using the 225/65/17 BFG K02 on my Big Bend and have no regrets, they look nice in the wheel wells.

It seems like 235/70r17 is gonna be the one i switch to when the time is right. The biggest reasoning for getting better tires for me is snow safety, so a larger diameter and similar width is ideal.

That is a 30" tire, so let us know how that works out.

I’m thinking about a Geolander g015 Yokohama in 235/70r17 also.
Still don’t understand how many different tread paterns the g015 has. Looks like the SL vs XL vs LT has different treads and agressiviness also. Someone knows something about? There are some g015 that looks really nice and others that looks like a on road tire.
