If the crossbars have the thin side facing towards the front they are installed backwards. The rounded side faces to the front.

there's a rubber strip that needs to be installed in the grove on the bottom and top of the Yakima crossbars. several people have mentioned that their dealer didn't install the rubber strips and they get a really loud whistle at speed.
