What functions on the Bronco Sport require the WiFi Hotspot? Is it really necessary for any function to work?

No, it's not necessary for any normal function to work. Your vehicle can still be connected to your home WiFi network for Sync updates without it.

Your vehicle's hotspot is no different than if you turned your phone into a hotspot. It has absolutely nothing to do with your vehicle's functionality otherwise.

There is the wifi that the car connects to. That's used for downloading sync updates. There is the wifi hotspot feature which costs extra and uses the cars modem to provide internet for your phones and tablets. Besides that the modem is used for fordpass features and that's free.

I looked it up for my carrier (AT&T) and it would cost $20/mo to provide wifi through the vehicle, but as all the phones in my plan have unlimited data it would make zero sense to add the expense to duplicate the function for all the devices. If someone wants to connect a laptop or tablet while in the vehicle they can just enable the hotspot on a phone and do it.
