Hi everyone,

I was searching through previous posts but couldn’t find anything about this, apologies if this has already been discussed.

I recently had my Bronco Sport (2.0) up on a lift at a shop and took the chance to really inspect the underbody, there are a lot of interesting design details.

I came across this device on the exhaust that I’ve never seen before. It’s not electrical, and it appears to be a mechanical rotating mechanism with a spring that provides preload. The tip rotates about 90°, and you can feel something moving internally when turning it.

I haven’t been able to figure out its function.

Has anyone seen this before or knows what it does?

Thanks in advance.

Saw your Facebook post.

It’s just a valve that allows the exhaust to be calmer at idle, and opens under throttle.

I removed mine when I redid the exhaust.

There’s also a non reporting catalytic converter on these which, to me is odd…

I remember those heat risers back in the day when I worked on lots of cars. As I remember, those worked for about 6 months before freezing up completely - at least on the Chevys. They restricted exhaust on on side of a v8 to force hot exhaust across the intake manifold under the carb to the other side.

The exhaust on the new 2.0 Ecoboost is restrictive as hell.
Very accurate! I removed all the restrictions from the non reporting catalytic converter back. I’m debating adding a small resonator to mine, because running mufflerless is kind of ridiculous. 🤣

The darned exhaust necks down from almost 2.5" to 2.17" at the muffler. I guess they got tired of making a muffler for both the 1.5 and 2.0 and now just use the smallest one? God forbid it make more than the targeted power. Lol. I have gotten rid of the muffler and added a Flowmaster FX kit, but plan on at least doing what you did back to it. Not a priority right now, but I will eventually. Add a resonator as well.

I'd be happy if removing the restrictions just gave better fuel economy. Have you noticed any difference?

It’s got a bunch of different bottlenecks in it. I don’t understand the logic on that one.
I know, it is insane and defies logic. Maybe they have an engineer who grew up on the internet and watching Fast and Furious movies who thinks backpressure is good. Lol.

Especially on turbocharged engines. lol

Now, with that said… there is only one thing I do know for a fact, that different sized bottlenecks in an exhaust system do… and that is it changes how the exhaust sounds… so these bottlenecks, along with the butterfly valve… could be how ford created an exhaust that they claim “doesn’t bother wildlife”. And that was something they posted on the new 2025 BS.

That is the only logical reason I have for them doing it.

Probably right on that. Some of the areas look like the old chambered exhausts from the '60s.

I removed it when installed cat back 3” pipe and and muffler because where I live the salty sea air and driving on the beach will eventually rust the spring on that and it will fail.
