Its not just a "knob" that is the problem that knob is attached to a module under that facia. That module has computer parts in it. So yes computers/modules fail sometimes and Ford dont make those they buy them. So this computer chip shortage is a problem along with the crisis in Ukraine. Ukraine is a big suppler of chips from what i read somewhere. This is chip shortage is not only in the automotive world its every where. I have a module in my daughters fridge that needs replacement but cant get it due to the shortage.

I had a brief issue with mine yesterday. Was waiting in line to pick up my children from school. Had my phone charging from the chord out of the center console and resting on top of the knob. 2 drinks in the cup holder. Lots of items/clutter around the selector area as I was stationary most of the time. Got the “wrench” light. Cycled it to park and it cleared.

I believe it was my actions that caused it. Those rotary selectors are sensitive and control lots of systems. One brief, erroneous signal will throw the light. Keep the area clear, clean, dry and hands off. There was another thread somewhere about scrunchie/ hair ties causing problems .. I believe it

now- one can’t possibly believe the manufacturer didn’t think of this. rotary drive selector knobs aren’t new.

Got the same error message. Brought to the dealer. Dealer had it for 2 days. Said faulty shifter knob. known problem. Parts are on back order. Driving around and no errors for 4 weeks since I got the message. Curious as to how long it will take to come in.

Took me 18 months to get a warranty replacement switch for my Harley. The wait sucks since no one actually knows how long it’s gonna take to get parts.
Best bet is buy pre 17 vehicle, before everything went to electric nannies for everything and where one issue causes a chain reaction for the vehicle to fail and dealers don’t know what to do unless the computer tells them

Just had my 22 in the shop with same issue. Light came on with app notification at 5,000 KM and 7,200KM. They said they had to reprogram the drivetrain… fingers crossed…

I bought a brand new Bronco Sport 2022 last week Thursday afternoon. After 3 days of ownership and 250 miles driven (Friday through Sunday), the Service Vehicle Soon light came on Monday morning.

I called the dealer and they swapped out my Bronco with a loaner that same afternoon and I've been waiting all week for good news.

The service department ran diagnostics on Tuesday and told me that the shift control knob caused this powertrain issue. A few days later and they're telling me they can't locate a replacement shift control knob.

I'm admittedly pretty skeptical at this point, and my gut tells me it's more than that. I'm afraid that my brand new Bronco Sport is off to a 'lemon start'.

Does this diagnosis sound legit? And if so, is a replacement shift control knob extremely hard to find? As of tonight (nearly 3 full days since the diagnosis), the dealership's service department has had my vehicle longer than I have.... and they have no estimate as to when I'll be getting it back.

I'm planning to request a new / replacement vehicle to swap for the one that I purchased last week. Does that sound reasonable?

Thoughts please!?! Thanks in advance!

Hi wondering if Ford resolved this for you? We purchased a 2022 BS OB on July 1 and the dealer has had it since the 6th with the same problem. They tell us they have no idea and are waiting to hear from the engineers at Ford. Pretty unsatisfactory answer.
It’s totally reasonable to look into lemon laws in your state when you buy a brand new vehicle thats defective and the dealer doesn’t know how to fix it. You’d be foolish not to consider filing a lemon law action.
Anyway, hoping you got this sorted. Please let me know what the fix was. Thanks!

This happened to me today. The shifter knob will not move and I got the exact same message as well. I’m was adding fog lights and thought it was something I did but I didn’t tap into any wiring at all. The steering wheel didn’t lock up either like it would as it be in park. What did the dealer do and how long may I ask?

I also got the Powertrain Malfunction notice and it was diagnosed as the Gear Shift Module. Having it replaced by dealer tomorrow

We're your lights flashing on your shift knob as well?

And what was your fix?
