When I was young, I had a Karman Ghia with a 1.2 L engine. I put a roof rack on it with a Jon boat on top of it. I couldn't believe how much it affected my gas mileage. Even without the boat, the roof rack knocked my miileage down 2 or 3 mpg.

The roof rack shown in my photo also cut my mileage down substantially. My cross bars are attached to the box, so they come off when the box comes off. Not pretty, but attached with U-bolts.

I hate the size and shape of the roof rails. Makes putting anything except factory crossbars on there a real challenge. I've spent months figuring out how to mount an offroad flag up there. Even the Big Bronco has mounts that will clamp the hood sights. Our options are limited to suction cups which is stupid, unless you add a tubular brushguard to the front, then you would have 1,000,000 other options.
