Good luck with that.

I naively began my quest for a Bronco Sport three weeks ago..
  1. One dealer said "Buy at Bommarito Ford. Where you never pay over MSRP". They wanted $3000 over MSRP but came down to $2000. They had two models in transit. One was sold 5 minutes after he texted me a photo of the sticker. I almost put down a deposit on the other. I think now, three weeks later it is still there. They wanted 6.9% for any loan.
  2. A second dealer, Lou Fusz Ford in St. Louis, promised they would sell me at MSRP. After a test drive of a Big Bend (on the lot) I spent an hour drinking bad coffee. The final sheet comes is presented. "We have a $1700 doc fee".. I walked out.
  3. Other dealers said "$5000" and I said no thanks. They call back with "OK.. we will sell at MSRP". I did not return the call.
It’s a little drive up to Morton Illinois but go to Mike Murphy if you can. My Bronco and Bronco Sport were MSRP with no issues.

And this happens..

Three Sales/Finance Managers at two major Ford dealers in St. Louis shared that a dealer in Illinois (near St Louis) lost ALL of their vehicle allocations and even some "in stock" new vehicles due to placing fake "Special Order" Bronco/Bronco Sport orders to Ford HQ. (They are east of St Louis and since just a double sourced rumor, I won't name them. Their name rhymes with "Awfullberg Ford")

At Clement Ford I noticed two Big Bends with unusual stickers right off a truck. They came from the Awfullberg event.

I bought a new Fusion from Afulberg Ford in 2017. Next morning I found a razor blade on the passenger leather seat. (prep probably getting sticker off window?). I drove to the dealer and asked for dealership general manager. My sales manager came out, took the blade off the seat and walked off.

Dealers where I live want $4000 or more over MSRP and $500 non refundable down payment to "lock" the car for you (they will no longer offer it to anyone else to buy).

So I have two undelivered Bronco Sports VIN's "locked" at two dealerships.
  1. Bronco Sport 1 from Dealer 1 [BadLands ordered by dealer months ago and is "built"] is probably in a parking lot in Hermillos. Dealer 1 charged my credit card $500 to promise not to sell it to anyone else. I am praying it has the Assist+ chip (so they can put it on the train).
  2. Bronco Sport 2 from Dealer 2 [Outer Banks ordered by dealer months ago and is "built" and on a train] has left Hermillos. Dealer 2 charged my credit card $500 to promise not to sell it to anyone else.
I will be out only one of the $500 downpayments when one of the dealers receives "my" vehicle

This is a crazy market for sure. (No I am not paying $4000 over sticker). Paying an extra $500 to go around the custom order process is worth it to me..

Regarding "ownership". (from what I read online for my state) Assuming you are financing, the second you sign the loan document with the finance manager you "own" the car. You are sitting there in a room.. but legally you just drove it off the lot so to speak.

[So.. no I didn't buy it.]
I paid a $500 deposit as well however I was told it was refundable, which makes sense given the hot market. If I walk away they can just sell my order to someone else damn near instantly (and probably at a higher price…I ordered at $500 under MSRP).

$4k over MSRP and they are not making money? Doesn’t sound like they know how to run a business.
No, they are making a profit but they are also choking due to a lower volume of sales.
Most dealers are not buying anywhere near the pre Covid volume of vehicles. Lots of manufacturers discounts and incentives when buying larger numbers.
Anything over MSRP and your playing right into their hands.

I think the problem is that the dealers can't buy pre COVID volumes. I'm sure that is what you meant but just to clarify that the supply chain is the issue. When you go to a car dealer and they only have 5 new cars on the lot, that is because they can't get the cars. It's not because they are playing some kind of game. So, to compensate for not being able to get cars to sell, they add the dealer markup so that they can keep the doors open and lights on. Basically every car right now is being priced like highly popular models are in "normal" times.

WOW After reading some comments I definitely feel lucky, ordered my BS Badlands in Nov 21 with $500 down (refundable) from Porter Ford and just got it 2 weeks ago, no mark-up, $1000 rebate and 2.89APR. LOVE my Bronco Sport!!
