That's so strange!
Probably state law requiring purchase of the items from a local dealer. Dealerships (cursed by their names) have lobbied well in state houses to protect their businesses from competition. There's rumor and speculation that a large part of why Ford is separating their EV business from their ICE business is to get around state laws that prevent direct to consumer sales except for electric vehicles.

Yeah that kinda makes me think when it comes to modernizing a retro style, ford tends to be better than most. The mustang redesign in '05 and subsequent models, thunderbird (fail), Bronco and BS etc.
I’d agree. THey were also really the first to do it. Ahead of VW & the new beetle, Ford brought out the SN95 Mustang, which did the retro thing years earlier and in fine 90s style.

There have been earlier periods of retro styling cues put on all cars, particularly the Brougham era, and certain cars to me, like say the 70s GM colonnade cars which remind me of 1940s cars, have tried some retro styling cues. But to me, and anyone feel free to point out if I’m wrong, the first example of a ā€˜retro’ car, and one done right, was the SN95. Which really I think set Ford on the path for those retro models you mention.

Funny though you mention the thunderbird redo as a failure. It kinda was wasn’t it. & yet not more so than other retro cars of the time like that Chevy truck thing. I wonder what all went wrong with the thunderbird program, and those few particular cars in that time, because Ford’s heritage now with newer cars is their primary strength!

Yeah I think they went to literal with the Thunderbird and instead of designing a modern car with styling cues made a modern version of the 50s car. I think they've done a good job learning from that mistake
