I'd love to see it back too. It was so unique compared to other SUVs. Suicide doors in the rear, three wiper blades, utilitarian interior layout, spare tire on the tailgate, and two-tone paint. And they are very reliable with tremendous resale value. It was just a matter of bad timing. It was released right before the great recession when fuel prices were at all-time highs. Considering the FJ Cruiser used the 4.0L V6 with the 5-speed automatic and had a very blocky design, it got horrible fuel economy so nobody was rushing to buy one at the time. It did soldier on until 2014 when fuel prices cooled but the damage was already done.
However, they could bring it back with hybridization technology if they wanted to but I think their lineup is too saturated with SUVs right now considering they brought back the Land Cruiser and introduced the Grand Highlander. Not to mention the upcoming Crown Signia and the relatively new Corolla Cross so adding another SUV on top of that would be overkill. I think they'll invest their resources and get the legendary 4Runner redesigned instead. It will be a spiritual successor to the FJ Cruiser because they shared the same platform if I'm not mistaken.
Oh, how I would love for them to bring the FJ. I had a yellow 2010 that I looooved. Unfortunately, it was totaled when another driver ran a stop sign. My Outerbanks is its replacement.
I loved them too. Had I not had a 1st Gen Tacoma built the way I wanted I'd have been all over an FJ. Biggest issue with them aside from the huge blindspots was Toyota frame rot. The clean, no rust examples just like early Tacomas are fetching serious coin.
