that’s right. And it will pass through nearly any solid unless it’s under extreme pressure (like 10,000psi) or cryogenic temp (-200 C or something). It’s not as efficient as one might think. Imagine those trucks going down your local highways. We’re already doing that and this is Far more dangerous. There are no hydrogen fuel storage facilities anywhere outside of Los Angeles. All the rest is liquid hydrogen and that’s with NASA and Elon.Hydrogen is also the smallest element. Long term storage of Hydrogen is nearly impossible given the energy required to keep it cool, otherwise it'll expand as a gas and risk failure if the fuel cell. Over time, the Hydrogen will diffuse out of almost any container it is in because the atom is the smallest and simplest in the universe and simply passes between the molecular spacing of other elements.
The hydrogen powered car idea has been around for 100+ years.
we’ll need insane amount of FOSSIL FUEL energies to make enough ELECTRICITY to produce the HYDROGEN. Now we’ve got to store it and transport it. And we have no infrastructure for this.. it’s energy to volume ratio is poor so your gonna need a lot of it.
I think Toyota lit all this off. Putting out ads that they have this new power plant that’s gonna change the automotive industry. We all saw the click bait banner. Well of coarse. They had to stay relevant in this whole political EV movement because Toyota didn’t believe in EVs , they wanted To double down on hybrids. Everybody has a fuel cell and a motor, that ain’t the problem.
Ive traveled to Iceland a lot. 20+ years ago they said they were getting off of fossil fuel. Great. They got geothermal power on that hot rock. Nobody is poor. And they’ve got 200,000 people. I was there 2 years ago. Petroleum stations everywhere. Now I think they’ve got some hydrogen buses. The government got invloved and prices shot up. They shouldn’t have said anything, they’d be a lot farther.
Folks - this is a capitalistic/individualist society. US and others too. It needs to be driven by the needs of the consumer. let the companies compete for business. As soon as the government gets involved, creates an agenda, and makes things law or create some sort of legislative agenda the tycoons and the politicians and the bureaucrats muddy the water quickly…prices will skyrocket, the system and development will become inefficient Intentionally. Greed
Why does this happen over and over again because they sell us all an idea and we go for it. That’s the design of it.
I’ll end on some good news. Battery tech is cruising. Maybe we’ll gather ourselves and have some awesome hybrids on the market soon.
