Extend door check strap/limiter?

I would like to be able to open wider one of the rear doors on my BS. Is there a simple way to extend the door check? What would happen if I just unscrewed it from the door frame and did not have it hooked up?

I'd be extremely careful, if it 'over opens' you'd end up scratching / bending body panels.

I know for example on the Honda Ridgeline that you can switch out to an extended Door Check that give the door the ability to open at more of a 90 degree angle.
