I have had a clicking noise also on my Outer Banks. It has done it, oddly enough, since I rotated my tires. I thought it had something to do with my rear differential, since it was coming from the rear.
I took it in for a diagnostic and the dealer is going to change the infamous shift lock cable because I have noise from it also.
I put my sport up on ramps today and discovered that my noise was coming from the heat shields that are over top of the rear drive shift. I found, because drive shafts have surface rust, there was a shiny ring around it where the heat shield had a low spot.
All this time, I thought I had a differential going out because it only made noise when the rear engaged according to the "intelligent 4wd" display.
I guess the PTO only spins the rear shift when engaged.
