Do you have any special Christmas/holiday tradition?
About 10 years ago we attended our church’s Christmas Eve service with our family - four grown kids, their spouses and the grandkids. We had aa total of about 20 of us that night. Following the service, we were hungry and headed to the only place open - Denny’s.
The service was horrible, the wait was long, and the food was mediocre. However, we had a blast. Just went, ate and hung out. At the end of the meal, and after settling the bill, we all pooled our leftover cash and left a tip that was fairly significant. The waitress, harried and hurried stopped to personally thank us for the gift. We explained that we didn’t expect much in the way of food (after all, it was Denny’s), but we did appreciate the fact that she did manage to take care of our large family on such a crazy night.
At that point, the tradition was born.
For the past 10 years, on Christmas Eve we meet at one of the local Denny’s restaurants in the Phoenix area (there are several, and we move around from year to year) for dinner. We stress to the younger members of the group how important is is to be patient, respectful and well-behaved. And every year, we set a family goal for the tip beforehand. We go with the knowledge that service will be slow and the food will be mediocre, but that’s not the point. We go with the intention of blessing our waiter/waitress.
Over the past ten years, we’ve had our waiter/waitress share how much they appreciate the gift, and more times than not, we hear how the amount was enough to meet a need in their financial life. We also share the joy and true meaning of the Christmas season.
