This is a good article outlining the causes of oil dilution. It's specifically about Honda's 1.5L turbo engine, but the issues apply generally to all engines. The takeaway for me is you should avoid a lot of short trips with a cold engine. If that's not possible consider oil analysis to determine the level of contamination (if any) and set a new service interval (if necessary). Ford's IOLM (intelligent oil life monitor) purportedly accounts for use cases like this, but every engine is a little different.

Thanks for that, Mark! As always, you find pertinent information that aids in broadening our awareness of potential problems. Just what a consumer can do to mitigate this particular issue is a bit concerning though. This question is coming from a guy who fared poorly in all science classes, does oil viscosity have any play in this problem?
