Cruising to work this morning on the highway about 55, in the dark. Met a suv on the side of the road with it's flashers and headlights on (kind of blinded me). As I went by there was a dead dear laying across my lane, didn't see it until it was too late because of the other other guys headlights. Had to take it down the middle between the tires. Didn't quite have the height as I scraped it pretty bad, or at least sounded bad. Felt it hit in the middle and rear, it probably rolled as I went over it. I just kept going, watching the dash for any lights or warnings. Nothing.

I haven't been underneath yet to check things out. From the pic's I've seen online of the undercarriage I don't think I sustained any serious damage, looks like the exhaust system hangs low. Probably a lot of fur under there. But we'll see.

Man...A colleague of mine did that once and it smelled so bad. He went through the car wash like 10 times in a row to get the smell gone, but still had fur hanging off the exhaust system.

Never thought of that, the smell. Lucky I can't smell very well, but I suppose someone will let me know. It looked like it was just killed, so not like it was all tore up from many vehicles running it over.

This is the Big Bend trim.

Update, took it in for an oil change today, 11 days after running over the dead deer. Here's what was found:

Blood and hair. The plate/cover that goes in that hole is damaged. Nothing else damaged, thankfully. I panicked when I first saw the pic, thought it was tranny fluid, but just blood.

Have a video to upload (.mov) but it's not loading properly. Blood and guts scattered down the center.

Two years ago, my wife was driving a very nice Hyundai Sonata. My niece came by on her way up from hunting with her dad and to drop by a chest full of venison on her way back to college. I was away, so the two ladies hoisted the chest full of ice, cold bloody water, and dead deer onto the back seat of the Hundai.

My wife is a driver who brakes hard. Very hard. At the stop sign a block from the house on a downhill slope, I'm certain that she braked as she always does, like Senna going into a hard corner. The entire cooler sloshed over onto the floor of the car and over the leather interior.

She cleaned it all up before I got home, but within a day or two the entire car smelled horrible. We rode together to work back then. Even getting a pro to ionize the interior for a day didn't help much. The stench stayed with us for weeks. Thankfully it was gone before we sold the car.
