For decades I’ve been using Securilock to leave a fob in my vehicle for things like going for a run when I don’t want to carry keys. That’s what it was designed for.
It’s honestly one of those things I find handy enough, even just going out to the garage to find the car locked & key is in the house, that I really wonder why every car doesn’t have it.

If I recall correctly it is because Ford patented it an I think they only licensed it to Mercedes.

I think you’re right. This article seems to indicate possible challenges with making an outside keypad work, but I’m pretty sure if it were possible for other carmakers to do this, some designer in the last 4 decades would’ve figured out how.

And apparently by this article there are at least a couple other cars that do indeed have keypads that I didn’t know about.

This is what I plan to do, let me know if this makes sense or if there's a better way.
  • Buy another Intelligent Access key from Amazon
  • Have a locksmith cut a blank mechanical key blade to match my existing key blade & store it in the magnetic key box
  • Program the new Intelligent Access key using the two original Intelligent Access keys
  • Remove the battery from the new Intelligent Access key rendering it passive. It will start the BS but only when placed directly into the hidden "backup slot" (see manual p156)
  • Store the passive Intelligent Access key in the glove box or somewhere in the vehicle.
I ran into a problem. Apparently it's impossible to "Program the new Intelligent Access key using the two original Intelligent Access keys" on a Bronco or Bronco Sport. Only a locksmith or a dealer can program another fob. Has anyone tried that and succeeded?

Did you try this?

Yes, I just tried it and failed.

What's a bit unclear is the instruction: "Press the driver and passenger power door unlock control three times." Does that refer to the unlock button on the fob, or to the unlock buttons on both doors simultaneously? I tried a few variations but never goes into programming mode.

Maybe this?

Dang. Seems odd Ford would make a special procedure just for the BS. Weird.

Out of curiosity, where are you putting the fob? I pulled up the rubber mat covering the wireless charging pad and there appears to be an indent the size of a fob under it. Maybe that's where you have to put it?

Seems to be special for Bronco & Bronco Sport. I've tried every procedure I can find, and verified a good battery in 3rd fob.

Correct, the fob to be programmed goes in the "tray", described on page 156 of the owner's manual. I also took a working fob, removed the battery so it is passive only, and confirmed that I can start the engine when that fob is in the tray.

Locksmith tells me that used fobs like the one I bought from eBay cannot be reprogrammed, must be a new fob. So that raises the possibility that a virgin fob would be programmable with one of the procedures you referenced. New fob, key cut & programmed, is $340 from locksmith.

Well, you seem to be a step ahead of me. I'll update if I get or think of anything new.

The intelligent access / door key code is great. Been making sure all my vehicles have it or something equivalent.

Hmmm... This would be a first. I have not tried it on the Bronco Sport, but the system (I believe) supports up to 4 keys and companion MyKey profiles and it shouldn't be a big deal to add a new key.. Which leads to:

I'm thinking this is most likely your problem. While I have not dealt with that issue on a Ford, similar systems have that lockout - many such systems across various brands are supplied by the same vendor. We lost a key to our Mini Clubman and I unpaired it when adding the new replacement key. It later surfaced and I was unable to re-add it as a third key. Had to take the key to the dealership to get it reset, but they have to send it out to have it done and said some keys can't be reset.

Update: I got my spare fob programmed by following this procedure exactly as written
I had tried this before but failed to remove the key from the fob as instructed. Anyway, the spare fob with battery removed will allow the BS to start if fob is placed in the programming "tray". Saved me $300.
