Does that also apply to foreigners driving in Italy, @Mark S.?
We never had any issues dealing with local law enforcement. Then again, we were US Military driving cars rented for us by the US Navy.

I had a friend that dispised the newly installed traffic cams installed a few years ago. Her refusal to acknowledge that they were just as legal as having a traffic cop pull you over was tested one day. She received a ticket and a fine in the mail a few months later, with the photo clearly showing her car running a red light with her at the wheel. Still in denial that it was a legal ticket she promptly sent in a "photo of $45" to pay the fine. A week later another ticket, double the first came in the mail. This time with a picture of handcuffs and jail bars. She promptly paid the ticket.

That's good to know that you didn't have any issues as military personnel. However, your comment is reassuring for civilian visitors as well. Avoiding unintentional violations will help ensure a relaxing trip focused on enjoying the amazing sights of Italy, rather than worrying about potential fines back home.

Wow, that's definitely a cautionary tale about disregarding traffic laws! It's understandable why one might not be aware of or accustomed to traffic cameras. But clearly the authorities there have no tolerance for dismissing fines as illegitimate. Appreciate you sharing this example, @V8 Yankee!
