Rookie question, isn't the 245 the width of the tire? why would that change the actual speed running a wider tire?

It's actually the circumference of the tire. The difference between a 225 and 245 is about 1" taller and 1/2" wider.

point is that it’s not really that far off. There is a calculator that I used and it ranges from 1 to 2.5 mph off at different speeds

Put a GPS odometer ap on your phone to get actual speed and compare for sure
