Has anyone experienced this issue? Looking through the forums there are plenty of issues of water pumps leaking on our Bronco Sports but I haven’t seen where a leaking water pump would cause a failure of the A/C compressor! Our Bronco Sport has 65,000 miles and has been a fun vehicle so far. We have followed Ford’s recommended maintenance schedule since we purchased the vehicle and other than recalls, TSBs, squealing brakes, continuous windshield cracks, it has been reliable. This new issue has got me perplexed that Ford engineers would design a vehicle engine where a unnoticeable water leak from the water pump will take out another component leaving the customer with having to pay for both repairs. I can see paying for the water pump (unless there is a recall) but why should I be stuck paying for inferior engineering?

Should I contact Ford Customer Service or will that just be a waste of time?

There are at least a couple owners that stated their alternator was ruined by the leaking water pump - in this case most likely due to a spray or small steam of coolant over time in order to reach the alternator

since you are out of warranty it is advisable to contact (1) your service department, (2) your regional service manager (you can get the name of that person from your dealership service department) and (3) Ford Customer Service. Contacting all 3 and asking for either full compensation for the repairs or at least 50:50 cost sharing might work in your favor.

I had to have my water pump replaced due to a leak. Ever since day one I noticed my coolant level slowly going down but never saw any sign of leakage until recently during an oil change. $1300 :(

Thank you for the input! The service manager at Kelly Ford agreed to a 50:50 split. That’s better than we hoped for. The challenge has been to get the parts. Compressor replaced but awaiting a second new water pump. Get this……the first water pump came in but the tech noticed it had a crack so they had to order another. A crack in a new part…..it doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. ?

That sucks……I suppose I am blessed because the dealership is charging us ~$1000 to replace the water pump and the A/C compressor. Absolutely no indication that our water pump was leaking and certainly no evidence on the garage floor.
