This^^^^. I had an early 90’s Escort that got rear ended. Unfortunately, it was totaled. I bought It from the insurance company and drove it for nearly a year before they balked. I took it to an old body shop where they stretched it straight, replaced the bumper, and threwsome paint on it. Cost me 500.00. I did have to have it inspected by the state before they would reregister it. My daughter drove it through high school and college. I drove it as a beater for a few years after she graduated. The only issue was it started to rust really bad where the subframe of the body was bent. Went over 200k before the timing belt busted. Junk yard gave me nearly 500.00 for it!The BS is unibody, so no “frame” in the classic sense. It’s all structural, so damage to the body is also frame damage, technically speaking, particularly where corners and door frames are involved. So the old saw about frame damage as a reason to total a car is a non-starter. Even if a ladder frame chassis is damaged, they can be straightened on a jig.
The main and often sole reason insurance will total a car is if the cost of repair is greater than the replacement value.
