Any time I have filled up my 23 Bronco Sport it gives me an estimated range of about 350-370. Recently i filled up again, and it only estimated 280. Filled to the point fuel was coming out. Any ideas?

Overfill like that is not recommended… other owners had issues doing that down the road

The estimated range isn’t all that useful - better to keep track of gallons and miles driven and do your own fuel mileage calculations if interested

The estimated mileage is based on recent fuel economy average so if that mpg is low for a trip, the estimate mileage will then be low as well at the fill-up. Hope that makes sense.

Can topping off your gas tank cause problems?
AI Overview (I look at AI with skepticism but I think this is at least mostly accurate)

Yes, topping off your gas tank can cause problems, including damage to the vapor recovery system and a costly repair to the charcoal canister. It can also lead to the "check engine" light coming on, reduce fuel economy, and release harmful vapors into the environment.

Problems with topping off your gas tank
  • Damage to the vapor recovery system:
When you top off, liquid gasoline can enter the evaporative (EVAP) system, which is only designed to handle fuel vapor.

  • Saturated charcoal canister:
The liquid fuel can saturate the charcoal canister, a key component of the EVAP system that collects and filters harmful fuel vapors.

  • Costly repairs:
A damaged charcoal canister can be expensive to replace and may require a repair that costs hundreds of dollars.

  • "Check engine" light:
A malfunction in the EVAP system is a common cause of the "check engine" light turning on.

  • Environmental harm:
Damage to the EVAP system means it can't capture harmful gasoline vapors, which then escape into the atmosphere.

  • Wasted money and fuel:
The extra gas you force in after the pump clicks off often flows into the station's vapor recovery system or the ground, meaning you're not actually getting more fuel in your tank and are just wasting money.
What to do instead
  • Stop filling your tank when the nozzle clicks off. This is a sign that the tank is full and you should stop.

  • Do not try to squeeze in more gas after the first click.

  • If you accidentally top off and the "check engine" light comes on, have the issue diagnosed by a mechanic to prevent further damage
I tried topping off once and ended up with fuel spilled onto the ground. I live in NJ so gas is pumped by an attendant. I watch as the tank is filled and while it rarely happens I do not let anyone try and top off the tank. I stop fueling when the nozzle clicks off.

I see you are in Texas, in the colder climes like Michigan, we get winter gas. This also delivers less mpg.Last week we filled up and saw a 370 mte. Drove 2 states over and refilled, 420 mte. Highway driving jacks up the Miles To Empty. Nothing wrong with the gauge, just hyper accurate.
