Dropped off my 21 BS OBX at the dealership a few days ago. Possible torque converter replacement is needed, maybe more. Vehicle was having problems in low gears, stuttering and such. Had the cat replaced in February. Thanks for it still having warranty. Why are these issues popping up with only 52xxx miles? Daily driver and don't push it all when I drive.

My miles are half of that and no engine lights.

I just had the torque converter replaced on my 2019 Ford Edge with under 48,000 miles on it. I started noticing shuttering when accelerating. There were no engine lights and no codes. I have the Ford ESP plan so luckily the repair was covered otherwise might have cost about $3,500. At least with the Edge it is a known issue and dealer said he sees a lot of them on the Explorer as well. The edge has the same transmission but the 2.0L engine so the OBX may not have the same torque converter but Ford's history regarding torque converter premature failure is not encouraging.

Just for information here is link to a torque converter discussion on the Edge forum:

Just got my 2021 Bronco Sport OBX back from the dealership. Entire transmission and torque converter had to be replaced. This is a daily driver, so very surprised that I had these issues. Thankfully everything was covered by warranty, including loaner vehicle.

Explanation on service paperwork:

Concern:
  • Customer States SHUDDER FEELING WHEN DRIVING - TECH 127 ROAD TESTED

Cause:
  • shuddering while driving and erratic shift delays Replaced transmission due to parts availability

Correction:
  • Automatic Transmission Assembly - Remove and Install or Replace
  • Extra Time For A Post-Repair Road Test.
  • Extra time to mount transmission on a bench fixture
  • M time for disassembly and assembly of core for return shuddering while driving and erratic shift delays connected

Tech Notes:
VCM to check for DTCs none found. Reprogrammed solenoid strategy and cleared adaptive tables. Concern still present. Monitored on datalogger. Torque converter is causing shuddering and delayed shifts. Removed transmission. Mounted on bench fixture for teardown. Found torque converter damaged internally, no. 15 bearing dug into transmission case, no.4 bearing burnt, no.1 bearing burnt, output planetary bearings worn out. Direct clutches and forward clutches burnt. Cost cap directec to repair, but due to parts availability, transmission replacement was required. Proceeded to replace transmission, reprogram solenoid strategy and clear adaptive tables post road test to verify repair.
