I was driving home from a short trip when my '21 Bronco Sport Badlands shuddered right in the middle of an intersection and stopped moving entirely. Some helpful folks pushed me out of the way.

Here's where it got weird. Turned it off and back on and the engine ran just fine, but when it was in Drive, it acted like it was still in Park. When I put it in Neutral it started to idle forward and would even pick up speed if I tapped the gas. I was very close to home, less than a mile, so this is how I got it back to my house (idle speed with my emergency flashers).

The next day I had it towed to the dealer, and they just called to tell me I needed a new transmission. $7000 bucks. A devastating amount of money.

Has anyone else had this problem? I do all the recommended maintenance, never took it off roading beside driving on construction sites (for my job), most of those miles were freeway, and I like to think I take good care of my vehicle investments.

It just boggles me the transmission would have problems at 77k miles. The worst part, naturally, is my extended warranty expired at 75k.

If you haven't already, you should definitely try and get them to honor the warranty even though you're 2k over. If you talk to the right person, or maybe if you're persistent enough, it's possible they could still help you out.

I actually had the transmission on my work vehicle (2015 Ford Transit) go out at around 85k miles, but it was too-far past warranty and it cost around $7K, just like yours. It's public sector, so... thanks taxpayers!

Oof! Very sorry to hear that. My ESP expires at 80k, so the idea of a latent defect right around that mileage terrifies me.

Hey there. Can you send over a message with your VIN and the name/location of the Ford dealer you are currently working with? I would like to look into your transmission concerns on my end.

Mine wasn't a transmission issue but the crankshaft seal on my 1.5 blew out of the highway at -40°c on 21k kms (13k mi) stuff just ain't built like it used to be.

That truly sucks. The only 8F35 I've seen let go internally like that was a 22 Transit that was used as a work truck, lots of towing miles for the year. Similar symptoms, it was a wreck inside. Internal filter and small clearances for the valves in the valve body. Keep that fluid clean, change at every 30K miles or 50K kms. Far cheaper than a new tranny. Sorry it happened to you.

My thoughts exactly. At just 2K miles over, they should offer some assistance, if not full coverage.

In fact, what would make sense would be if all warranties were like battery warranties -- 100% covered for X years, followed by a prorated period.

For example, in this case, maybe the full warranty would end at 75,000 miles, but then slowly taper to 0% at 85,000 miles. So a failure at 80,000 would be covered 50%.

That would minimize the aggravation of an expensive failure just out of warranty, when it drops from 100% coverage to zero overnight.

I have had the exact same thing happen. 67K miles. Just outside of warranty. Called Ford and they will not help with repairs even though it is close to warranty and the dealer told me there was no amount of maintenance that could’ve prevented a failure like that.

Hi. I have the exact same issue as this poster. Would you be kind enough to look over my problem as well?

“dealer told me there was no amount of maintenance that could’ve prevented a failure like that” - yeah right. Make better quality parts that should last at least 100k miles in the first place.

That sucks! This just happened to me last Friday with my Ford Focus. 103K miles and the transmission just stopped. I had to basically beg her to make it to the dealership before she died in the parking lot. They quoted me $8900 for a new transmission. I ended up buying a new Bronco Sport instead. I had just payed off my Focus in February so I was looking forward to a few years of no car payments, but I’m totally happy with the purchase. This seems to be a trend with Ford transmissions from what I have been reading up on.

So my Bronco is, well was awesome. We've put 93k on it in the short time we've had it. I just replaced the shocks and struts about two months ago, had a full service a month ago "with and transmission flush" and last week it was starting to jerk and wouldn't go into reverse so it went in.

I just had a dealer tell me "there's a bunch of internal damage in the transmission. Particularly in the CDF drum there's a bunch of clutches that are pretty messed." So now they want me to pay 7500.

Has anyone heard of a transmission flush causing more issues? Because the car was working fine for several weeks before this happend.

FWIW the 10 speeds in the F-150's are also having CDF Clutch Drum Problems.

I hope when they did the transmission flush they put the right amount of fluid back in it.
