Purchased my car a week ago - it was one that was sitting on the lot. When we were signing papers, we were told that they couldn't find one of the two keys and had me sign a paper stating they owed me a key. I am going to contact today, but blows my mind that 1) it was lost and 2) they didn't have one in stock to program?
My question is - do they need the car to program a new one, or can they program without the car? (they told me they didn't need the car, I find that hard to believe given experience I have had with other vehicles). thanks!

If they told you they don't need the car, then I would take them at their word until you find out otherwise.

I think a new fob can be programmed with using the VIN, which the dealer that sold it to you would have from the sales contract, plus their own records.

just to follow up - I did receive the spare key in the mail. not sure if it was new and programmed or an original. I was only asking originally because the dealership is about an hour drive from me on a toll road and I was dreading the thought of having to drive there to get it programmed.
Previous experience with missing keys was that the vehicle was needed to program. (Jeep Cherokee)

Easy to tell...see if it allows you to start the vehicle. Leave the known good one in the house.
