I have been waiting for some time for The Tire Rack to post their results from their winter testing of AT tires and have been curious to see how the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W did both in that and in the customer survey.
Well! The Wildpeak's blew the others out of the water in the customer category of "would you recommend" with a score of 9.4 with the next closest tire, the Pirelli Scorpion A/T+, coming in at 8.9. For those of you who don't pay a lot of attention to their survey results, I'll just say they can change daily and the newer the tire the more likely they are to change! I suspect one reason for their outstanding survey result is their pre-covid pricing and that we will see a steady decline in that 9.4 rating.
As far as test results, the Falken's did well but not outstanding. All tires were tested on an F-150 and if you go back as far as the 2019 results, you could say that the Yokohama A/T GO15 is the best A/T tire, yet it is in 13th spot in the customer survey, of 245/65/17 tires!
Tires are a personal choice based on your needs and desires. I tend to look at the survey results and see what did well and in what categories, then see what TR tested them against and see how any tires I'm interested in did, in the areas I'm most interested in. Those areas for A/T tires, for me, are, Off-Road ability, Wet performance and last but not unimportant, Winter/Snow performance. YMMV (literally)
My top choices, as a result are, in order of, todays survey results are,
Faken WildPeak A/T3W, Cooper Discoverer A/T3 4S, Pirelli Scorpion A/T+, Toyo Open Country A/T3, BFG A/T KO2.
If I had to buy the tires today, I'd get the Pirelli's, in a 245/70/16. If BFG suddenly comes out with a KO3 in that size or maybe a 235/75/16, I'd might get that.
Also under consideration is the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T 245/65/17, with 16/32 of tread depth and 29.8 in in diameter, in a Hybrid tread design.
