I just wanted to share some limitations on a rooftop box from experience. I borrowed a standard size (not low profile) Thule box for a recent ski trip. I had it side-by-side mounted on crossbars with 4 pair ski mount. Great for hauling gear outside the cavity but created some issues. Places we were staying had underground parking with limited vehicle clearance height. One I had to forgo, instead paying for a surface lot a mile away in negative temps. I discovered the issue before the trip, when I had to remove the box to escape my office’s garage. Drive-in height wasn’t the issue, it was the drive-out height on the ramps. This time of year I keep the ski mounts on but even those I wince when clearing the sprinkler system pipes.
