OK, I'm expecting the salty posts to come in, but here goes:

Finally broke down and bought Bronco Sport to deal with daily driving on mediocre roads and in the winter so we could give our Mustang a less stressful existence. I (sort of) went off-roading today when backing up over a curb in front of a store. Silly question - does the 4wd work in reverse? It was a relatively small (about 6 inches tall) curb and I was on an angle but it seemed like the Bronco was struggling a bit to clear it.

When you say struggling can you be specific? Wheels spinning? Engine laboring? Both?

That's true for just about any normal passenger car. It's a small engine that doesn't make a lot of torque at low RPM. I'm pretty sure the 4WD system remains engaged in reverse.

Curbs are designed to keep cars out of certain areas. They are difficult obstacles for any normal vehicle. That’s the intent

It is a bit difficult to go over curbs going forward or reverse whether the vehicle is 4WD or not.
It's hard to judge how much gas pedal is needed to get you up the curb which basically works as a wheel chock to keep you from going over it.

Were you driving around a parking lot with 4W locked in? The system isn't going to engage itself because you hit a curb.
