I am starting to lean that way, I watch a few reviews on the Overlander and currently the value is just not there for the price and the map downloading is cumbersome and time consuming. So for road trips, I download off Google maps. You can download huge areas. I have all the West Coast download on my phone.
For trail maps I use Gaia and a tablet I got off of Craigslist for 70 bucks. That's a really good budget option and works great. You just need to make sure the tablet has GPS.
I have several iPads, I will check to see if any of them have GPS, I do know all are WiFi only and if they do not have GPS I could always get the following:
Dual Electronics XGPS160
I am also thinking of getting a Garmin InReach Mini for that moment when it all hits the fan.
