Happened to me in New Mexico. Filling the BS and watching gas fill total and realized it was too much gas. Turned to find lots of gas on the ground. Hosed off everything and reported spill to attendant, and got a "too bad, so sad" type of response. I miss the days when an attendant filled your car AND washed the windshield!
That is why you are supposed to be at the pump and not sitting in your vehicle.

+1 for Tigger's post. The only way your car's refueling port design could influence the operation of a pump nozzle is the other extreme—to make the pump shut off prematurely. That's been reported by a few forum users, and it's easily avoided by pulling the nozzle out of the refueling port an inch or two before actuating the nozzle.
Yeah this is an absolute ridiculous design flaw. Having to pull the nozzle out so the pump doesn’t shut off is nuts. I’ve never had any other vehicle where this occurred. Another example of lack of engineering oversight.

This is not the only vehicle I've owned that cannot accept full flow at all pumps with the nozzle fully inserted. I've seen it on a pickup truck from another manufacturer, several different motorcycles, etc. My Mustang was like this, and the wife's Escape is the same as well (although as we know the Escape is built on the same platform as the Bronco Sport).

Here's what I do:
  1. Fully insert nozzle.
  2. Retract nozzle slightly.
  3. Actuate pump handle.
You don't have to retract it enough that the nozzle won't stay in the receptacle without holding it for my car, so I don't view it as a hassle at all. Can you leave it in yours far enough so it stays in place without holding it?
