I see you had a 2010 Xterra - I had a 2013! My BSBL has totally made me forget my X! I renovated it and gave it to my granddaughter as it was only 1/2 through its life at 150K miles!
I have had the same problem with my little beasts traversing through the middle of the console from back to front seats. My wonderful Molly (Boxer-Pit) loved to lean on me would step on the middle gear shifting stuff, turning things on! I finally resorted to putting up a screen between front and back to keep my pups where they are safe, in the back seat. They still stick their noses through the screening material but I am so much happier with them in the back! I still talk to them a lot. It solved the problem!
