Covers on rear struts

I was cleaning the BS and happened to notice on the left rear strut cover was up and the right one was down. You can easily move them up and down, why are they not fixed in the up position ?

I was going to say, those detents on the narrower part probably lock onto a nub. But there isn't one. I just went and looked at mine. Not only can you slide the cover down, I felt the inner part of metal ring, no nubs! I guess it's "working as intended".

My money is actually on Ford's response being "you can add a dust boot, but add it on your dime". They are dirt cheap (ha ha ha) so the money is in the install labor unless you do it.

It's just a dust cover. Slide it up and twist to see if it hangs. If not, a bit of tape around the top of the boot (the black plastic part) will provide enough friction to hold it into place.

Tried to get them to stay up but looks like they are not supposed to ?
I’ll keep a eye on them and maybe do the tape trick.

Yeah, they're supposed to be "up" ('cept for Bilsteins)...
