With all the Fords sitting on holding lots waiting for chips, I started to wonder how the whole process works. How are chips installed on vehicles? I understand vehicles use multiple chips, but is it plug and play under the hood and the vehicle comes to life? Are chips usually installed in the factory and it's part of the assembly line?

I would imagine that the chips get installed in assemblies that are then plugged into each vehicle. So it ends up being a three-step process. Install the chip into the assembly, install the assembly into a vehicle, test all of the pieces of the vehicle that are controlled by that assembly.

Would be fascinating to examine the data several years from now to see if vehicles built during this mess have more warranty claims due to quality issues, installing chip components months later, etc. One of my neighbors is having all their new home windows replaced because the factory screwed up some components in that batch. I hear stories like that across all sectors.

If I'm in the used market in the future, I'll probably avoid anything built from mid-2021-2022. I also realize that if this sentiment becomes prevalent, my 2021 Bronco Sport is also impacted.

That would be interesting to see what kind of claims come up in the future! I read somewhere that some companies' quality isn't the same because their previous employees were on unemployment, so they hired new employees, and the new employees weren't as proficient in making the products. Also, it seems like a lot of people are rushing to make things to keep up with the demand which makes the quality control suffer.

Yep in the end this is going to be a giant CF thanks to a lab induced "flu" virus and overreach. It will take years to recover from this nightmare.
I don't know if we'll ever get back to "normal life" with all these variants but I'm excited for the day that COVID isn't the cause of delays to get anything. I'm also excited to see car production get back to normal. It's crazy, sometimes I forget what year we're in because I feel like 2020 was "wasted" with staying at home and figuring out ways to avoid COVID.

Variants is another fear monger tool. It's a virus. They mutate. I won't even go into "causation"...any virus changes and more often than not those adaptations weaken the virus. This media blast is control.
