What are the pros and cons of each type of top carrier. As my BS will be the vehicle that takes my wife and me on camping trips, and we have dogs, I'll need added storage to get all the unnecessary crap equipment to the campsite. Is there an inherent advantage to one style over the other, or is it simply a matter of weight/volume capacity and style?

Both are still stuck with the same raised rail capacity 150lbs. A basket is going to be a lot lighter allowing for you to put more up there. It will come down to what you plan on actually putting up there.

Platforms use a t-slot track which makes adding accessories very easy. You can strap items down individually using eye bolts. They also make rails for most of the platforms to give you a basket feel. They also make specific time downs for camping specific items.

This comes down to a personal preference.
