Has anyone tried a smaller wheel size? There are quite a few good options for off-road tires in the 16" sizes, but I don't know if the brakes would clear a 16" wheel.

Method makes a 16x7 +30 wheel that fits with a 245/70/16 as seen in this by HRG.

Good video..
HRG's 16 inch rim and tire combo with 245/70/16 tires has the same overall 29.5 inch tire diametet as when running 245/65/17's.
The difference with the 16 inch combo is the sidewall of the 70 series tire is a 1/2 inch taller, this offers less rim exposure and may allow more tire flex which could aide traction as well.

Steelies and K02 245/70R16. Diameter is essentially identical to 245/65R17, which many use without interference, but I'll get .5" more sidewall.
Hard part for me is I have to buy my wife and I both tires 😂 got a good quote today I might just put the KO2 on the 17” steelies look so cool wish mine had come with those factory ones
