I noticed a faint smell of coolant and assumed the pump was going. I saw evidence of a leak at the pump and took it to the dealership. After pressure testing the system, I was told it is leaking from the thermostat cooler hoses (circled in diagram) and it would be $1,600 to repair as the extended warranty doesn't cover hoses! Apparently, the alternator has to be removed which drives the hours much higher. Have any members encountered this particular leak and does this sound reasonable?

Out of curiosity for future reference - where did you get your colored parts diagrams?
Thanks

What extended warranty do you have?

Ford ESP PremiumCARE - I reviewed the terms of the contract and it looks like coolant hoses are considered a wear item and aren't covered...
Interesting - I have 1 2003 Explorer Sport (2 door) and have never replaced any coolant, hose, or pump in the entire system. You'd think that a 'wear' item would fail inside of 23 years
