I live in Ohio's snowbelt. I will use the slippery mode if there is snow on the road. If it's really bad then I turn on the 4wd lock. I've had 2 Badlands and they both made this noise. Makes similar crazy noises on start up. Sounds like gears clicking into place or something.

I don't know if you have the same noise as me but my dealer is getting me a loaner so they can spend more time trying to figure out what's causing the noise. But he said it is perfectly safe to drive.
