It keeps the dogs out of the back seat, you do have to tighten once in a while. I hadn't noticed the black marks as its up permanently for the moment. Sorry you didn't like it

apparently. his great uncle was 110 lbs (not from same lines, it just sounded good) and his "sister" is 68#. They look short to me considering the 85# great dane mix we also have lol
