I have seen pictures on the forum from people who have put vinyl graphics on their sport so I know its possible, but I was wondering what exactly you can get made. Obviously nothing offensive, vulgar, demeaning and so on, but what about things that are designs that are representations of very large company owned characters?

For instance, one of six mane horse characters that are in a tv show that was aimed towards young children but became a massive hit among older males with too much time to watch cartoons. More specifically an orange colored pony with apple on her flanks as a decal on a cyber orange badlands trim sport?

Alternatively if the horse decal wouldn't stand out enough against the cyber orange, just a trio of apple decals in a certain pattern-arrangement on the rear door. Wouldn't want to order such a decal and apply it only to get a picture taken while out an about that leads to a letter from a megacorporation that is suing me.

If I had to guess I would say it wouldn't be a problem simply because people like to stick sports teams logos on their rear windows all the time, but I would rather not spend the money if its going to cause issues.

Generally if you aren't profiting and it's private personal use it's not likely going to raise eyebrows. It gets sticky. A lot of these Etsy folks are pushing the envelope. My college coach runs a screen business. He made Calvin and Hobbes shirts exclusively for us, decked out in our maize and blue uniforms, cost of materials and no more. Of all things, we were on campus at Stanford, and someone connected to the artist took note...the coach received a cease and desist with request for destruction of the shirts and screen or a $10K lawsuit was coming. it was a bit over the top and pretty unusual.

People sell their original art of trademarked characters openly at conventions and don't get desist letters. They also sell lithos of the same artwork. You're not even selling, you're the end user. I think your concerns are entirely unwarranted. A decal on a car would be way below the time, money and effort of Hasbro. Ever seen how many Decepticon and Autobot stickers are on cars? Think they're all actually from the trademark holder?

Believe it or not FedEx is anal about it....as is Joe Gibbs Racing.

FedEx I would believe. Doubt Gibbs controls the brand logos though. So a replica car, maybe but there is a metric ton of Monster Energy and M&M logoed merch and stickers out there. I doubt Coke and Mars produce it.

I agree with everything in your response. It's probably on some legal line, as OP seems to already know. But they're well below the surface of the company's notice. Look how many Bronco broncos people are churning out on stuff. Heck, I have 8 aftermarket broncos on my ride, all made from the Ford media kit files, heh.

Yeah and assuming you use on your ride it's not worth it. Open a store yeah you might have an issue. Monster and M&M no, but their stylized numbers and JGR logo or any affiliation with their driver name likeness or identifying combinations they have been known to go after the most petty of things. I've done work for Kyle, he was exceedingly specific how we went about things. They sincerely don't play. Again, a 18 on your bumper...no worries. A storefront without royalties approval and license...yep.
