I was driving home from a short trip when my '21 Bronco Sport Badlands shuddered right in the middle of an intersection and stopped moving entirely. Some helpful folks pushed me out of the way.

Here's where it got weird. Turned it off and back on and the engine ran just fine, but when it was in Drive, it acted like it was still in Park. When I put it in Neutral it started to idle forward and would even pick up speed if I tapped the gas. I was very close to home, less than a mile, so this is how I got it back to my house (idle speed with my emergency flashers).

The next day I had it towed to the dealer, and they just called to tell me I needed a new transmission. $7000 bucks. A devastating amount of money.

Has anyone else had this problem? I do all the recommended maintenance, never took it off roading beside driving on construction sites (for my job), most of those miles were freeway, and I like to think I take good care of my vehicle investments.

It just boggles me the transmission would have problems at 77k miles. The worst part, naturally, is my extended warranty expired at 75k.
I had my Badlands 2021 transmission go out at 63K but luckily had extended warranty that covered the repair. it went out in the beginning of 2024 and i currently have about 110000 miles on it. when i picked it up dealer said it was covered as long as i own the car. crossing my fingers

But ford cheaped out on this one, and it’s biting customers in the ass that don’t do proper fluid changes… a lot of people are “flushing” them at 15,000-20,000 mile intervals.
My dealer is quoting me around $360 for a fluid flush at 79k miles because we have the odd stutter/shift issue only on a cold start within the first couple of miles. I have an extended warranty until 84k - so either this flush fixes it or causes it to finally fail.

But 15-20k service interval at $360? Yeah no thanks this is a Ford not a BMW. If I was to follow what every "maintenance expert" on the internet does, I would be spending $400+ every 6 months on a vehicle I spent $29k on.

For me… 15-20k miles is 1.5-2 years.

$360 every two years to maintain my transmission is a negligible amount.
