I know Carmax is usually not a good deal, but man almost $7k over the cost of a new one …

Heck I would let mine go for that. I am not married to it, it is just a get by until I find something I want again.

So 42k would work for me.

"No Haggle Price", yeah, that's a walk-away price. I swear those companies are taking cash on the back end from dealers and used salespeople to keep the prices inflated. Consumers are being fleeced.
Don't pay insane markups. Period. There are so many extra vehicles for sale, it's laughable. Last month, I walked out of every dealership that said they added a "market adjustment". That eventually meant going 400 miles away to buy, but I bought at MSRP or less and got exactly what we wanted. The same vehicle, one model year older, with 9,000 miles on it, is still for sale at a dealer near me... for $3,000 more than I paid, and without a transferable factory warranty.

I mean, this just isn't true though.

Also, in your own story, you traveled 400 miles to buy your vehicle.

Except, it is true. If there were not extra vehicles for sale then the used car lots would be bare and the Craigslist and eBay auto sales would have no listings. There may not be every variety of car in every color available to suit every buyer, but that's a long way from they don't exist. Anyone that needs a car can get some sort of car. Whether they overpay or not is up to them. If the cars are worth what Carvana is advertising them for, then every single car dealer should send their entire inventory to Carvana, because that seems easier and more profitable than pesky sales. I feel bad for anyone that gets fleeced by these manufactured "market adjustment" prices and I can only hope that prices drop like a rock and leave Carvana holding a bag of used cars they overpaid for. Carvana, by the way, being the brainchild of an ex-con that committed S&L fraud.

If people refused to buy at those prices, then they'd have to lower them. But a ton of people seem to be overly flush with cash right now. Probably from the lockdowns and vacation money not spent. So if you walk around like a Rockefeller, a car dealer will be one of the first to take advantage. Don't play their game. No one should buy this Bronco at that price. I say that as someone with a vested interest in keeping my own resale value up... that price is just plain nutty. Cars don't appreciate 25% in less than a year and if they do, I'll say it again, everyone should sell everything they have and buy cars to flip to Carvana and their seemingly endless pockets of buyback money. It's some kind of shell game being played.

Yeah, I travelled. So what? If you have a car, 400 miles isn't far. I like to support my local establishments but I don't love them enough to fork over $2,000, $3,000 or even $5,000 extra because they're asking it. Even at today's gas prices I drove the Bronco there and both drove back for about $100 total in fuel. I'm sure you won't believe the mileage log either: Bronco went 407 miles and used 14.83 gallons refilled at $4.499/gal ($66.71). That was "only" 28MPG in the Bronco; new car 41MPG coming home so about another $22. Easily worth 3 grand+ saved.

My dealer had three come in the same day I bought mine. No markup no problem. If I wanted one I would have to pay MSRP not X-plan. If I order I can get X-plan.

I had to break my wife from CarMax. She doesn't want to negotiate and thought that used cars are always a better deal. I asked why she'd pay only $2k less for a car with 20k+ miles on it. I got involved after her last deal with Honda went bad since I am always up for working out a deal. We haven't purchased a used car (or another Honda) since then.

There shouldn't be any tricks. Find the car you want and sit down and work out a deal. If that can't happen, walk away and find another dealer.
