It's not so much the RDU and fluid as the vent letting gunk in. By proactively changing your RDU and other fliuds you've very likely saved your RDU and even after you get the updated vent tube that regimen should keep it happy.
A sticky turbo blow-off valve will make that kind of noise. I did find that out by not connecting a blow-off back on once after replacing a turbo....that sound drove me nutz!
If you have ever taken your BS off road or live on a dirt road, you should be changing out that RDU oil now, and then maybe even with every oil change until Ford bothers to get the parts to the dealer.
Seriously should be a recall item.
Ford isn't the first company to do this kind of screwup...
Dude you are a trip. Seems Ford is willing to use unwary BS owners as a control group to test service intervals and durability. BS owners, proceed accordingly.
At the rate we are seeing failures, owners will be changing fluids at 150K along with their transmission-if they make it that far. You're smart to get it done. Oil is cheaper than metal.
The bulletin does describe the affected vehicles, and IIRC the vent was modified mid-2022.
We got rid of our 21 BS because of this issue, which rightly should be a recall as it if the RDU fails in traffic it would be a dangerous situation. Apparently Ford forgot that owners might actually take...
Really are you still saying to not replace oils as preventive maintainence if the face of multiple reports of failures?
Oil is always cheaper than metal, folks. Follow your instincts and independent tech advise rather than the stealth Ford guy trying to keep the lid on a boiling pot of...
From our experience, Ford Motor Company support people on this forum will contact you and cheerfully do precisely not a damn thing. This issue is going to cause a lot of people grief if they do actually take their BS offroad. Anyways, keep an ear on that rear end and get your gear oil changed...
"i'm leasing it for 3 years" then yeah nobody is going to bother.
Otherwise for those in for the long haul your schedule is a good bit more proactive and sensible.
I'm wondering why some of the members here have such a bug up their ass about changing fluids?
Must be a transmission/RDU/PTU salesman.
So I'm guessing that a certain percentage of users should have their fluids changed on a regular basis and others maybe should test their units to failure and...
We have a BS OBX and a 6G base in the fleet here in northern Michigan and until the snow gets really deep the BS is the better snow vehicle. Even a 4A system isn't really as good as a good AWD system.
Before the 6G there was a Land Rover LR3, with the LR AWD with low range and terrain response...
After watching the Escape oil change video with the ATF looking that dark and gunky at 21.000 I'd say that the fluid was not as servicable as one would like, and since the procedure seem pretty simple even a caveman should be able to do it.
"Lifetime" fluids mean the lifetime of the warranty...
I can't see any downside to your additive solution, so I will look into it.
Ford seems to have left owners open to some large and unneeded repair bilss.
Can anyone think of a reason a dealeship would suggest that the transmission fluid NOT be changed?
Our dealer talked my wife out of having hers changed, saying it was good until 100K. Seems to me it's not that hard really, good insurance and from I'm seeing it's probably due at closer to 60K.
As I've mentioned other times, our local dealer wants $582 to replace the vent tube per the TSB, plus they can't get one from Ford or so they told me. I'm thinking it can't be that hard to replace? I haven't had a look but some sources say it's a $20 part, so how many hours does this take?
We...
Did you get the updated vent hose installed?
I'm thinking this would be good preventative maintence. Ours started the chatter about 3K miles on the wrong side of the warranty, and when I took it to the dealer with the TSB they said yep, that's it, $582 OTD for the new vent hose, if they could...
So while we are on the subject-some of the early Land Rover LR3's had a similar problem with the vent hose being too short and letting dirt and water into the pumpkins. Quite a few owners added their own extra long hoses before LR came up with a solution. I'm thinking there may be a homebrew...
