I find myself getting offroad more often and I'm starting to feel that my BSBL needs some additional or improved armor for its sensitive bits-- what are the consensus "must dos"?

Some sort of front skid (covering the gap beneath the radiator and the bottom of the plastic bumper) is the only thing beyond what the badlands has that I'd consider really necessary. You'll tear the plastic wind dam on the bottom of the bumper quickly, otherwise, and there's no protection other than thin plastic to keep a stick from going into the radiator from underneath without an additional front skid.

Clearance is a bigger issue after that (and the BS BL's main limitation). A small lift will help more than additional skids. (and with that said, I still haven't installed a lift after 3.5 years, but it's on the "soon" list)

I, too, have the lift kit in the box in the garage. I want to, but just can’t "pull the trigger” and do it. Fortunately, I’ve cleared all the mall parking lot bumpers without it

I wouldn't mind a skid plate where the current protection is that fabric one. I tore mine in Moab this last summer. Also took a good hit to the plate covering the gas tank but it did its job.

I ripped the carpet skid plate on my first off road adventure. Fortunately, on the BL, there is a skid plate over the evap. cannister. I bought the skid plates from JCR, and have a writeup about the install. Not too bad once you have the right tools. The Badlands has a skid over the gas tank, and it was needed. I haven't bothered to put the passenger side skid on yet. There's nothing too important on that side. I drive a lot of rutted roads with rocks in the center mound. The Catalytic converter is located right in the center, so I installed the skid for that. I also got a 1-1/2" lift. I don't like the sound of scraping underneath me when driving rutted roads. Let's face it, all Forest Service and BLM roads that are interesting, are rutted. Dove season is coming up soon, so I'll get a chance to try out all of these improvements.
