Maybe new owners focus their attention on upgrades, like appearance, accessories, or modifications. While those choices shape the look and feel of a vehicle, long-term reliability and safety are often determined by basic maintenance habits that are easy to overlook.

Simple routines can make a meaningful difference, such as regularly checking tire condition and tire pressure, keeping the driver’s footwell clean to avoid interference with pedal operation, preventing dirt, sand, or moisture from accumulating inside the cabin or underbody, paying attention to the fit and safety of interior components, not just their appearance etc.
These details may seem minor at first, but over time, they directly affect driving safety, comfort, and vehicle lifespan.

We’d like to open this discussion to the community:

What car maintenance tip you'd like to give to a new owner?

By sharing your advice, you’re helping create a practical knowledge base for new drivers and contributing to a safer, better driving experience for everyone in the forum.

Your experience could be the tip that helps someone avoid a costly mistake.

1) If you purchased a BRAND NEW Bronco Sport. Change just the motor oil (no filter) at 500mi, again at 2000mi (no filter), and then go regular intervals @ 5000mi with filter. Why not change the filter as well during the first 2 short intervals is because a slightly dirty filter cleans oil better than a brand new one.

2) Do not follow the owners manual fluid change recommendations. Ford does not make money by selling you one vehicle every ten years. Ford warranty ends at 3 years\36,000mi for a reason.

3) Not one ounce of fluid in the Bronco Sport is "Lifetime". (Ford will tell you the PTU fluid is Lifetime fluid and does not need exchanged)....

Waste of money and resources. Just follow the oil change minder when changing oil.

I have 171,000 miles and the engine runs great.

Scientifically proven the most engine wear occurs during break in. This is not speculation it's 100% fact.

3 oil changes are much cheaper than a new engine.

The oil change reminder is designed for 10,000 mile oil changes. No way in hell I’m going that long between oil changes. Even with running Liqui Moly oil and NAPA platinum filters, $50 my cost, every three months is no big deal.

Well, my mindset is that I will change my oil every 6 months or 5K miles whichever comes first.

Being retired, it's almost always at the 6-month interval using Semi Synthetic oil. As I've said before, not a waste of money for me.

Almost all collected oil is recycled in some form and used responsibly. JMO.

Yes, it doesn't matter what brand oil we run. They all get dirty and they get diluted with gasoline. The longer we wait to change the oil, the more dilution of gas it gets. Transmission fluid changes are recommended by all mechanics I know at 50,000 miles. Better safe than sorry.

Well no shit sherlock. Of course most engine wear occurs during break-in. That's exactly what a break in. Is. Parts wearing into their normal position the way they're manufactured to. Absolutely no reason to change oil that frequently. And if you're changing the oil you should be changing the filter. You don't do an oil change and leave the filter on. Even during break-in..

No the oil minder is not designed for 10,000 mile changes. If that was the case then it would be 16,000 km on a Canadian vehicle. My oil minder triggers between 8,000 and 10,000 km. Which is equivalent to 5,000 to 6,000 mi.

Well idk about how Canadian vehicles are, but my oil life indicator starts at 100%, and when it hits 90% I’ve put 1000 miles on it.

my oil change I just did this past Sunday showed 58% left and I had 4200 miles on it.

So, yes. 10,000 miles. Same as my fusion was. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s possible, being in Canada the oil life indicator defaults to “severe duty” which would align with your mileage.

Further expanding on this:

I did my oil change at 9,612 miles, I’ve put 95 miles on it since Sunday, and now my indicator is at 99%.
