Sup Sportsters!

Another first for the Broncos Sport community was an invitation from United by Bronco for Sport owners to come and enjoy two dedicated days of trails picked out for the AWD Class. This was headed up by Melissa and Brian Clark from BAM Adventure Tours. Some of you may know Melissa from the Rebelle Rally, racing Ford Bronco Sports. She also contributes to Bronco Nation. Her detailed article of this event is here.

Show Up or Put Up

I wanna focus on the experience of coming to UBB for the first time. We all remember those feelings on the first day at a new school. I did not want to be a spaz, but not putting it in “D” and revving up my engine a few times before I realized that was embarrassing at the first line-up take off.
Anyway, it is very important that you pay attention to the time of events. For example, there was a pre-registration day on Tuesday at the Pecan Valley Resort clubhouse, which I missed so I had to get up at 6 am Wednesday to make sure I was at the staging area to get my information packet and stickers for the four day event. On Google maps this area is called “Water Tanks at Hurricane Sand Dunes OHV area”. I noticed there were some people registering on the day of, which does cost more than if you just pre-registered on the website - unitedbybronco.com.

Food and Drinks

I jokingly asked one of the sponsors setting up if this is where we get the steak and egg burritos. No Bueno. However, there was a coffee trailer on site every day. Some sponsors had a variety of energy drinks and sport drinks up for grabs as well. So if you’re a breakfast person, you may want to eat something before you show up or pack something with you to eat during a break on the trail. Definitely pack a lunch and waters. It’s also good to know that Utah has very strict laws regarding alcohol, so there is absolutely no alcohol allowed on the trails or any glass bottles for that matter. Also Utah requires everyone to show ID when ordering alcohol drinks and if it’s a restaurant, you must order food per 2 drink order. This was my experience and it made this Old Man happy to be carded.

I stayed in Hurricane, which was 20 minutes away from the staging area and I used Highway 7, which was the bypass loop from the housing construction area. I want dust from the trails not road construction, I’m just saying. Of course, by this time next year, those houses will be built and there may not be an issue taking the main Sand Hollow Road to the staging area. You will see a sign “Sand Mountain OHV” before you arrive at “Waddy’s Corral” staging area. On my free day I actually went to Zion National Park and hiked to Weeping Rock. “Lin’s” grocery store was a good place to get pre-made sandwiches, drinks, snacks and hot meals. It was recommended to try River Rock Roasting Company, which will be on the list for next time. Applebee’s is the only late restaurant open till 11pm. Most close by 9 or 10pm.

Flags and Things

I never actually went into Sand Hollow State Park but if you need a dune flag and mount, they sell them inside the park for about $30. So my next point is you definitely need a sand dune flag that is at least 8 feet high from the ground of your vehicle. So the pole length will depend on where you mount it. So you may ask where do you mount a flag on the Bronco Sport? That’s a great question. There was such a variety that I noticed in our group from hitch mount adapters to window suction mounts. I actually attached my flag to my weBoost antenna which was mounted on my roof rack rail so I was over the 8 foot requirement, but that allowed me to fly two flags. So if you’re planning on joining next year or doing any sand dune offloading, this is something that you need to think about.

UBB also does an easy Night Run trail, so “light'em if you got’em”. On Saturday they arranged a Ladies Only trail run. Trail Boss was Amanda Williams of the Utah Bronco Club.
Due to my schedule to get back home. I missed the Saturday afternoon vendor tabletop show and expo. Hopefully I can do this next year. Perhaps there'll be some vendors there that cater both to Sports and full-size Broncos. So calling all sponsors of this forum! Please reach out to UBB and see if we can get some Bronco Sport love from you vendors out there.

This Year and Next

Finally, shameless plug for those of you who miss this event, dry your tears, there’s a similar event - Bronco Safari! My article about that is here. I’m calling all Sportsters and Sponsors of this forum to join me at this event in June. For more detailed information click here for their new website. There’s no planned Bronco Sport AWD class at this event, but don’t worry they have some really easy trails and for those who want a challenge, I recommend any trail with the highest rating of four.

UBB event was well organized, and there was mutual respect and appreciation for enjoying the outdoors. With my “Freshman” year done, will I come back for my "Sophomore" year? Will UBB have more for us? TBD. I had a great time and met good people. Some are here in this form so I’m looking for YOU to to hit LIKE on this article. 🤠

Bruce, great article for an elicit freshman in the UBB club. I like you, hope we see many more Bronco Sport meet ups in the future. It was a pleasure getting to know you out on the trail. Yes, I too took a couple of bumps along the dusty road of sport pleasure. Nothing serious, but it definitely let me know what the pushed limits are.
