Also: Ford Bronco and Ford Ranger

“Ford Bronco was the 17th most dangerous vehicle given its fatal accident rate of 6.6 per billion miles, which is 2.3 times higher than the overall average of 2.8. In terms of individual model types, that fatality rate also ranked the Bronco seventh among all SUVs, compared to a segment average of 2.2. The Ford Bronco wasn’t the only Blue Oval vehicle to make this list either, as it was joined by the Ford Ranger – which ranked as the second-most dangerous pickup.”

The articles in Post #1 and Post #2 look like cut n paste articles, very odd

Here is the list of most dangerous cars. most-dangerous-cars-study from the iseecars website. Actually there are 17 cars worse than the Bronco Sport. Since the 21 model year the Bronco Sport Government 5 Star Safety Rating on the window sticker is overall 5 stars with rollover receiving 4 stars as compared to similar cars in its class. So I guess overall the Bronco Sport is doing a good job of protecting its occupants in an accident.

From the Ford Authority article linked above there is this: "New cars are safer than they’ve ever been,” said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “Between advanced chassis design, driver assist technology, and an array of airbags surrounding the driver, today’s car models provide excellent occupant protection. But these safety features are being countered by distracted driving and higher rates of speed, leading to rising accident and death rates in recent years."

Most modern cars are loaded with safety features to help protect the passengers in the event of an accident. So is it the car or those driving the car that is the issue?

Any vehicle is only as safe as its driver. SUV’s, in fact any off road vehicle, don’t roll over or crash — their drivers do. We heard this with Jeep Wranglers, they were always rolling over. No body talked about the fact that their young, untrained, drivers were trying to take off ramps and freeway connectors at 60-70 mph when they left the road. Problem with all these studies is that they only look at the vehicles and not the drivers.

Drivers, either the owners or other fools on the road are 98% the problem.

Their brain housing group constantly malfunctions. From texting to inattentive driving to stupidity, all contribute to safety issues and accidents.

This thing is a tank.

I've seen aftermath pictures here and on FB groups. The fatalities must be negligence related, not structural. Don't drive distracted, use safety equipment and drive responsibly and stay alert on adaptive cruise, it isn't self-drive. I think you'd have a difficult time dying in the Sport.

It has been brutal on my wallet though. 6 more months of payments to go, yeesh!

It’s because people want to be right more than they want to be happy. I certainly can behave this way. But as I get older, I find myself trying to win the day less and less. I’m becoming content.

agree. I buy what I want and as long as it serves me and my family’s needs, I run with.

I remember, years ago, my local Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep salesman telling me that the shiny new Viper in the showroom floor will have a short lifespan. He related to me that the average person that purchased it had no idea of the limits of the vehicle and how to drive the thing on public roads. He related to me that these vehicles were wrapped around trees or telephone posts within a few weeks of purchase.

Vehicle manufacturers want to build on/off-road performance products that their customers want to buy. But then their buyers often don't trouble themselves to understand what they actually purchased.

Though I traded in my Bronco Sport for the Bronco, I think Ford has generally gone out of its way to market the Bronco Sport to its targeted market, provide training on driving them and documenting their limitations. But you know there are YouTube "influencers" that actually expect these little AWD unibody 3-cylinder marvels to make through the Moab and Rubicon trails.

BS IIHS safety ratings (see drop-down menu for 2021>'23):

https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/ford/bronco-sport-4-door-suv/2024

The ratings are all good (with the exception of 'seat belt reminders' for 2023 & '24). So that suggests that that the typical BS driver is 'less than safe.'

But why would that be? After all, it's not like the BS is a muscle car. It's not a canyon carver. It doesn't beg to be driven fast. As people have mentioned, distracted driving is an issue, but that is the case regardless of the vehicle.

From Google AI (FWIW):
"Age: The median age of a Bronco Sport buyer is 55 years, which is similar to the average age for the segment."

This may not be representative of buyers overall, but here is a survey on the BS forum:
https://www.broncosportforum.com/forum/threads/average-age-of-a-bronco-sport-owner.8735/page-3

Very few are young. So it seems the average age of BS buyers does not explain the higher accident rate.

Very strange.

The devil is in the details. The median age of a Bronco Sport buyer is 55, but what is the median age of a Bronco Sport driver? I know of at least one parent who bought the BS for her young daughter. Something to ponder…

My parents would frequently give me the car keys to run errands when I was a teenager. I didn’t buy the family car, but I sure used to drive it a lot (and did some REALLY stupid stuff with it as well.) Ahh…to be young and invincible again.

Good point.

Of course parents buy all sorts of vehicles for their kids, so that percentage might be about the same for a range of vehicles.

Nothing really stands out. I expected the average age of owners/buyers to be much lower than 55. If it was, that might at least partially explain the higher than average accident rate.

Something else to look at is the various types of crashes. For example, a slightly higher than average rollover rate might be expected, since the BS has a 4/5 rating. Still, that wouldn't account for the higher than average accident rate.
