Recommended maintenance for Bronco Sport Badlands PTU (Power Transfer Unit) and RDU (Rear Drive Unit)

To all Bronquito Owners,

Im thinking on doing the PTU and RDU maintenance and I was wondering if anybody knows what is the recommended fluid and additive from the manufacturer. Also, based on your experience, if you guys used something different, what you guys recommend for this maintenance. Mine is a Bronco Sport Badlands 2022.

The PTU on my 22 Badlands doesn't have drain plug. Does yours? I'm not going to drill and tap it when it comes time for service, I'll get as much fluid out as possible with a suction device. I'm not sure if there's a better way to drain the fluid.

The PTU on my 22 Badlands doesn't have drain plug. Does yours? I'm not going to drill and tap it when it comes time for service, I'll get as much fluid out as possible with a suction device. I'm not sure if there's a better way to drain the fluid.
wait a minute... I though all PTUs from Escape MY2020 and up (same as bronco sport) had the drain on the PTU!

Ford recognized it need to be serviced at some interval after years of PTU getting cooked with that 400ml of fluid.


EDIT: It kind of ...has a drain plug, it's just being used by the oil to water cooler😎

Ha-ha, yeah, I'm not sure I like that drain plug. I could do it that way, buy I'd hate to open a can of worms. Would it have been too much to ask for a regular ol' drain plug? Apparently so.

I do 30K fluid changes on the RDU, PTU and Transmission, pretty easy to do. Many on this forum have voiced their opinion that 30k is too short of an interval for those components to have fluids exchanged out. I believe they are high heat and load bearing fluids, and I would rather use shorter fluid change intervals. All three components - RDU, PTU, and transmission - do NOT have external fluid filters, but the transmission does have an internal fluid strainer that can only be reached by tearing down the transmission. Regular fluid replacement intervals can help keep the components working without failure.

I have a 21 BS BB has the 1.5L engine. Turns out the PTU in mine has a drain plug, other build dates might not have the drain plug. Even without the drain both the PTU and RDU are serviceable from beneath the car.

If you don’t have drain plug on the PTU you can extract the oil from the PTU using a syringe with a clear flexible hose about 24" long. You’ll should get about 24 ounces out and refilled with new oil before it starts dripping from the fill hole. That's 24 out of 32 ounces (1-quart).

PTU oil - Motorcraft XY-75W85-QL Synthetic Hypoid Gear Lubricant, torque for drain plug 40 nm , fill plug 15 nm.

The RDU is much easier with the drain and fill plugs very accessible. The RDU holds roughly the same as the PTU, about 24-25 ounces out of 32 ounces (1-qrt). I use Motorcraft XY-75W-QL Gear Oil.

Rear Diff Unit oil - https://a.co/d/5FWve70
(.8 qt), fill with Motorcraft RDU XY-75W-QL.
Magnetic fill drain Plugs, replace both with part 6C2Z-4N282-AA, torque for tightening is both 21 lbft/29 nm.

Thanks for this info. I really appreciate the explanation. Im being prepared to perform the RDU oil change this weekend. Bought the Motorcraft XY-75W-QL so I should be ready. At the same time I will try to identify if any drain plug available for the PTU. If you have any picture to reference what im looking for it will be great.

The original first fill plug from the factory was not magnetic, but the drain plug is magnetic. I replaced both plugs with magnetic versions as Ford recommends the Service Manual. I ordered the two plugs at the dealership parts counter, only a couple dollars each, and I believe it was with this part number 6C2Z-4N282-AA but check with them first. You can also buy them online via various sources - Amazon, PayPal, etc. I also use a light coating of Permatex on both plug threads for the PTU and RDU.

For the RDU, if this is the first time fluid is being changed, you should ALWAYS open the fill plug FIRST and examine the current fluid level. If fluid starts to drip out upon removing the fill plug, then that means it is full. That's a good thing. However, if you put your little finger in the fill hole and it feels dry inside the casing, or you have to reach your finger further down into the opening before finally getting some oil on the tip of your finger, that's not a good thing. It means the fluid is low and has been running low for a while. Way back when we first bought our Bronco Sport, on the first day, I pulled it into our garage and went through the entire vehicle checking fluids, filters, and functionality of each feature. To my surprise, I found both the RDU and the PTU fluids were a bit low, so I topped them off as needed.

So, once you know the current fluid level, continue the procedure by opening the drain plug and let the fluid into drain into a pan. If this is the first drain and fill on your Bronco, the fluid most likely will be very dark. Examine the fluid in the pan for any particulates, metal shavings, etc. and make note of it in case you have to have the RDU repaired later. Once it's drained, install the new/clean drain plug and fill it with the fluid until it starts weeping out of the fill hole. Reinstall the fill plug, and you're done.
