Key points:

1. Select 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Ford Maverick models equipped with the 12V enhanced flooded battery (EFB) were found to have experienced, on some occasions, an abrupt failure while owners were driving them.

2. This failure stems from an internal corrosion issue that is influenced by exposure to higher underhood temperatures.

3. Ford has replaced the EFB with an absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery as both a service component for the subject vehicles and as original equipment for Bronco Sport vehicles with production dates beginning in mid-March 2024.

4. The warranty claim rate for peer vehicles equipped with an AGM battery is substantially lower than that for the subject vehicle population.

Also as previously reported “Ford indicated that the (24S24) update will result in improved detection of 12V battery state of charge during drive cycles” however “improved detection” is weak wording and falls short of stating the detection is ~100%… and owners that have had 24S24 completed have stated their vehicle died dead with no warning.

Also previously reported Ford stated 24S24 “will provide notification to the driver if the battery significantly degrades while driving” however this is also not correct because owners that have had 24S24 completed have stated their vehicle died dead with no warning.

One key takeaway is Ford now uses the AGM Battery which implies owners that still have the EFB should strongly consider switching to the AGM Battery.

I'm waiting for the tin-foil-hat crowd to claim someone paid off the NHTSA... :bandit:
lol had same thought when I posted the article

As I’ve said before it’ll take a year or more to see how well Recall 24S24 works but clearly the NHTSA isn’t reading the Forum posts of owners posting their issues after 24S24 was completed

however - my thought is those early failures post-24S24-completed are just the battery was too far gone regardless (the “internal corrosion issue” affected the battery mostly EFB but some AGM Batteries too based on the warranty info alluded to in Post #1)

I'm sitting here right now with my 24S24 letter on my desk. I just stacked my new 24B47 letter on it. I have the lead acid battery from 2021. It hasn't been an "issue" but the battery is certainly inadequate. I have to keep a trickle on it to park the car for a week or it goes low enough to disable the ASS system. I never got the 24S work done due to the reported issues. I would rather drive on my current battery (and deal with charging) for another 3-4 years and then just replace it with a better unit when it's about 7 years old, which is typically where batteries last for my vehicles. I don't need new issues to develop from recall work whether it introduces new problems or simply makes the existing issues expose themselves more and in spectacular ways.

Oregon isn't exactly the warmest place I could be so maybe that helps with the "higher underhood temperatures". Or else, maybe my engine cover absorbs all that terrible heat.

wow sounds like a song

Got my 24S24 letter on my desk,
stacked my new 24B47 letter on top,
And I have a 2021 lead acid battery

Im living on the edge!
You picked a fine time to leave me rear wheel
Now my rig needs the 24S24 and a 24B47 and I’m living on the edge with my ‘21 EFB

I am getting my BS inspected next week and I am still running on the original battery (2021 purchased 3 years ago in September with 27,500 miles). I was going to ask them to check the battery - or should I just get it replaced? Can I assume I have the EFB?

At 3 years old I would replace the battery. My experience is the OEM batteries are only expected to last about 3 years. This includes the AGM batteries. They are also only warranted for 3 years. Regardless of which battery that your BS came with you should replace it with an AGM battery. Ford Parts only lists the AGM as the battery for my 24 BS but I got the EFB battery and the dealer will not replace it unless something is wrong with it. When I asked the dealer shortly after I had the BS about the battery he mentioned something about a shortage of AGM batteries which is why I think Ford was putting the EFB batteries in new vehicles.

You are still in the 3 year 36 month factory warranty period and Ford will install the AGM Battery for $0 if the original factory battery is bad. Ford dealership would do a load test to determine if the battery is bad or not.

See post #1 for discussion on AGM Battery which you can show the dealership if needed.

if battery tests good by Ford dealership you can wait until the battery dies then pay for a new AGM Battery yourself or replace it anytime before it fails for peace of mind.

When my lead Acid battery failed I received some warning but didn't quite understand it. I had display warnings that to conserve power they shutting down some of the systems. The next day it failed at the supermarket. My dealer was pretty good about it but said they had to run a series of tests on the battery before Ford would replace it under warranty. Te tests took about most of the workday. They replaced it with an AGM. Later had the recall.

The battery label looks like this: It says EFB right below the rating on the left side.
