Premature wear on rear brake pads (3mm at 20,000km)

I remember we did it at one time but the machining and labor costs were more than a set of rotors??
Shouldn't be. If it was, you got clipped. O'Reilly's charges $25 per, NAPA is $25-$50. New rotors are ~$75 for aftermarket, and ~$125 for OEM.

Hey everyone.
First post here, but have owned a 2024 BS OB since July 2024.

This is my wife’s daily driver and so after its first oil change at 15,000km I didn’t notice the vehicle health report showed the front pads were 8mm and rear were 6mm.

She just had it at a non-Ford shop to have the summer tires put on and the mechanic noticed her rear pads were significantly worn for the age of the vehicle and measured them at 3mm. She has just hit 20,000km so this kind of wear on the rear pads seems excessive and premature.

I did some googling and saw there was a brake lining recall with earlier model years, but has anyone else experienced this kind of wear this early on the rear pads?

The dealer is going to do a brake inspection next week, but the other mechanic said that visually everything else like the calipers look to be ok.

Any experience or theories about what could be causing the premature wear (e-brake malfunction??) would be appreciated so we have some ideas to throw at the dealer next week.

The dealer performed a brake inspection and said ā€œbrakes have life left for sure. 8mm in the front and 5mm in the rear. Minimums are at 3mm. No need to replace yetā€

So basically they’re trying to tell my wife the other shop mis-measured (possible) but that in 8 mths they wore from new (10mm I believe) to 6mm (multipoint inspection by Ford in February) and are now down to 5mm 3 months late, as though that wear rate isn’t going to continue and mean it needs new pads by the end of summer, or just over a year after buying it new.

I’ll update again after we talk to them (the above quote came in a text message).

It’s not so much the time it’s the number of km the brakes have been used … according to your posts it’s been about 10 months since purchasing vehicle new and over 20k km put on the vehicle meaning if Canadian warranty is similar to as stated in Post #12, you are within the 1 year warranty timeframe but exceeded the mileage part of the warranty

Might just be that your wife is just on the brakes more than say a typical driver that gets more mileage out of the brakes which could be due to the types of roads she drives on having frequent staps and go

It’s not so much the time it’s the number of km the brakes have been used … according to your posts it’s been about 10 months since purchasing vehicle new and over 20k km put on the vehicle meaning if Canadian warranty is similar to as stated in Post #12, you are within the 1 year warranty timeframe but exceeded the mileage part of the warranty

Might just be that your wife is just on the brakes more than say a typical driver that gets more mileage out of the brakes which could be due to the types of roads she drives on having frequent staps and go
Could be, I don’t drive with her enough to give a good opinion (or one that won’t get me some dirty looks lol).

for now, we’re going to push back a bit and go see them being measured in person because someone either mismeasured or is trying to be sleazy.

Front: 53k km
Rear: 33k km

It is an excessive wear pattern at least for the rear brakes but we don’t know the type of driving she does and the roadways she uses

Most of the driving is city with some highway. I have a Mach E so any longer drives (in mild or warm weather) we use the Mach E.
She drives the BS about 40km round trip per day for work and I’d say it’s probably 30% city stop and go traffic and 70% highway. All of it is paved roads and we’ve never taken it off road.

shes pretty routine in leaving it in the normal driving mode and so if that mode utilizes the rear braking for stability it could be a factor but to be at 50% or more wear at 20km seems unusual which is why we’re asking questions.

My wife has a friend who drives with her left foot on the brake all the time. You'll see their brake lights on all the time. My wife continues accelerating towards a red light until the last minute. She wears out break pads much sooner than I do.
